Banker, Wildcard, Young Gun & England Watch

Banker: Simon Harmer (BWL) £8.8m

Commonly one of the highest-valued players in The Cricket Draft, Harmer will likely remain a top priority on many managers’ shopping lists this term. His 40 wickets last season were the second-most for a spin bowler, with only Jack Leach taking more. He also adds significant value with the bat; typically slotted at 8 or 9, he scored 300 runs at an average of 20, including a half-century. Harmer remains a premium pick for 2026, and if he stays fit for the duration of the summer, he is guaranteed to provide the big returns seen in previous years.

Wildcard: Michael Pepper (WKT) £6.7m

Pepper earned the fourth-most points for a wicketkeeper last summer (1,778) while valued at just £6.0m, at least £1.0m less than the three players who outscored him. With Jordan Cox away at the IPL and Adam Rossington having left the club, Pepper is guaranteed the gloves for the start of the campaign and a consistent spot in the middle order, representing excellent value for money.

Young Gun: Charlie Allison (BAT) £5.1m

The 20-year-old made his debut last summer and quickly cemented his place in the side, making 12 appearances in Division One. He enjoyed a clinical breakout year, scoring 735 runs at an average of 38.9, including three centuries and a fifty. Heading into 2026, he will be looking to retain his spot and kick on from that solid foundation.

England Watch: Sam Cook (BWL) £8.4m

The 28-year-old made his Test debut last summer against Zimbabwe but has yet to feature again in an England jersey. While he has long since proven his quality on the county circuit, Cook will be looking to start 2026 with a bang to force his way back into international contention, especially as selectors may look to tweak the attack following a disappointing Ashes winter.

2025 Review

County Championship Division 1 Table
County Championship Division 1 Table

Despite finishing sixth last summer, Essex weren’t far from where they wanted to be; just nine points separated them from third-placed Somerset. Essex impressed most on home soil, winning two and drawing five of their seven matches at Chelmsford, maintaining its reputation as a fortress. In a tightly packed mid-table, small margins often decide title contention, and Essex will be looking to bridge that gap in 2026.

While six players passed the 700-run mark (Paul Walter 914, Matt Critchley 859, Tom Westley 841, Michael Pepper 816, Charlie Allison 735, and Dean Elgar 725), none managed to reach the elusive 1,000-run milestone. With the ball, Jamie Porter led the attack with 49 wickets, while Simon Harmer provided his trademark support with 40.

2025 Stat Attack

  • Matt Critchley was Essex’ highest point scorer in 2025, collecting 1991 points, the 15th highest for any player last year.

  • Simon Harmer finished 2025 as the third most popular player, in 31.2% of squads, with only Kyle Abbott and John Simpson in more teams.

  • Jamie Porter had the ninth highest points per game average for bowlers collecting more than 1,000 points (154.33 PPG).

  • Simon Harmer had the fifth highest point total for bowlers, whilst Porter was seventh.

  • Porter’s 49 wickets were the fourth most in county cricket last summer, with Harmer coming in eighth spot.

  • Charlie Allison had the ninth most points for batters valued £6.0m or less (Michael Pepper was first), with Allison being valued at just £4.3m, he was an excellent budget option last year, will he remain so in 2026…

Player Ins & Outs

The main thing Essex have looked to do this winter is add depth to their seam attack. Zaman Akhter joins from Gloucestershire, while Mitchell Killeen links up from Durham. There has been a very heavy workload for Shane Snater, Jamie Porter and Sam Cook over recent years, so adding new options will allow Essex to rotate the attack more freely.

The squad still remains small, so there could still be some additions or they may continue to back their Academy players, which they have been excellent at doing in the recent past.

Simon Harmer returns as a reliable overseas option, after several years of success at Chelmsford. Meanwhile, South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder fills their other overseas slot for the first half of the season. He has plenty of county cricket experience, having impressed at Leicestershire in the past, and adds quality to both their batting and bowling units.

Nick Browne and Jamal Richards have departed the club, as has hard-hitting wicketkeeper Adam Rossington.

2026 Fixtures

Essex will begin the campaign with three away matches in their first four games, with Somerset visiting Chelmsford between trips to Hampshire, Warwickshire and Surrey making for a pretty tough start to the season.

Consecutive home games follow in May, against Hampshire and Leicestershire, where they’ll be targeting back to back wins. Essex end the summer with two home games and two away games in September. They face Sussex and Warwickshire at Chelmsford, with trips away to Yorkshire, before going to Glamorgan on the final day of the season. If they start well, that run in could prove very favourable….
