Overview
Essex will be desperate to bounce back after a 2025 season to forget. They finished at the bottom of the South Group, managing only three wins against 10 losses. Their total of 14 points was the lowest across all 18 counties, making a major turnaround the top priority for 2026.
To bolster both their batting and bowling departments, the 2019 winners have recruited Wiaan Mulder. With Mohammad Amir leading the attack last summer, the Eagles are now seeking fresh reinforcements with the new ball to fill the void he leaves behind. Jordan Cox and Michael Pepper will be expected to provide the firepower at the top of the order, supported by a host of versatile all-rounders who offer depth with both bat and ball. While they face a challenging group, Essex will be aiming for a much stronger return and a push for the knockout stages.

Key Picks: Banker, Wildcard, Young Gun & England Watch
Banker: Wiaan Mulder (ALR)
A South African international in all three formats, Mulder is set to be a cornerstone of this Essex side. Having previously played in the Blast for Leicestershire, where he made 26 appearances, took 12 wickets, and scored 546 runs with a high of 83*, he brings proven experience. Mulder’s ability to control the middle overs before accelerating at the death makes him a high-involvement player capable of delivering massive point hauls.
Wildcard: Paul Walter (BAT)
Though registered as a batter in the game, Walter is frequently called upon to bowl for the Eagles. In 2025, he sent down 31 overs and picked up 10 wickets, alongside scoring 326 runs at a strike rate of 149.54. His versatility is his greatest asset; he can open the batting or slot into the middle order. Those potential "out of position" bowling points make him an excellent wildcard pick for a batting slot.
Young Gun: Luc Benkenstein (ALR)
The 21-year-old was a mainstay last summer, playing all 14 matches. Valued at £5.7m, he offers a budget-friendly way to secure consistent game time in your lineup. He scored 210 runs in 2025 (best of 62) and took 11 wickets at an impressive average of 21.81. For a cheaper budget player, his match involvement is hard to beat.
England Watch: Jordan Cox (WKT)
Cox has already earned nine England caps, most recently against New Zealand in October. After performing well for the Lions in the UAE over the winter, he will be determined to break back into the senior side this summer. He was a rare bright spot for Essex last season, smashing 342 runs in just 10 innings at a strike rate of 165.21—including a brilliant 139*. His versatility in the batting order makes him a dangerous asset in any format.
