Surrey 2026 T20 Blast Cricket Draft Preview

Overview

Remarkably, Surrey has not won this competition since the inaugural season in 2003. Despite regularly reaching the latter stages, they will be desperate to go one step further in 2026 and finally reclaim the trophy. Last summer, they finished second in the South Group on net run rate, tied with Somerset on 11 wins and 44 points. However, a remarkable individual knock from Ravi Bopara saw them exit at the quarter-final stage.

With several players in and around the England setup, international availability will be pivotal. After rotating through 22 players last year, Surrey will be hoping to maintain a more consistent core group this season. They currently have one overseas slot remaining, with Sean Abbott being the only confirmed signing so far. Following the use of Mitchell Santner and Adam Zampa last year, the club may look for a frontline specialist spinner to spearhead the attack. On paper, Surrey remains a powerhouse with immense squad depth and will undoubtedly be a title favorite once again.

Key Picks: Banker, Wildcard, Young Gun & England Watch

Banker: Will Jacks (ALR)

Jacks is a cornerstone of the Surrey side. As an opening batter who may be asked to bowl his full quota of overs in the absence of a frontline spinner, his match involvement is incredibly high. Last summer, he was in elite form, smashing 504 runs in just 10 matches, including a century, while averaging 50.40 with a strike rate of 164.70. His seven wickets are a bonus that makes him a premier captaincy candidate.

Wildcard: Ollie Pope (BAT)

With Jacks looking for a regular opening partner following the departure/rotation of Dom Sibley and Ryan Patel, Pope could be a sneaky selection. As he has fallen down the pecking order with England, his availability for Surrey is expected to increase. He averages 28 with a strike rate of 132 in T20 cricket and featured five times in 2025. Because he isn't a "T20 specialist" in the eyes of many, he may fly under the radar as a high-quality "left-field" pick.

Young Gun: Ollie Sykes (BAT)

Valued at £5.1m, the 21-year-old featured 10 times last year and showed flashes of brilliance. He batted eight times, maintaining a strike rate above 160. While the Surrey XI is littered with international stars, Sykes provides genuine explosive power; if he can cement his spot in the middle order, he offers immense value for his price tag.

England Watch: Tom Curran (ALR)

Although he hasn’t featured for England since 2021, Curran remains a global T20 mercenary with a wealth of experience. He is a versatile asset who can be promoted up the order as a pinch-hitter; last year, he contributed 237 runs with a top score of 49* and a strike rate of 171.73. While he only claimed six wickets last summer, expect a motivated Curran to significantly improve those bowling numbers this time around.
